LOSS PREVENTION

COMMON TYPES OF EMPLOYEE THEFT

Although theft is only limited by the thief’s imagination the most commonly identified types of employee thefts are:

  • Payroll: Falsifying or Inflating payroll, hours and expenses & not “clocking out” for breaks all can constitute "theft".
  • Money: There are dozens of ways employees steal money every day without being noticed, this can be especially prevalent in cash businesses such as bars and restaurants.
  • Business Espionage: Literally stealing the entire customer, job or account and sometimes even selling it to a competitor.
  • Merchandise: Prevalent in retail and all businesses who maintain stocked inventory.
  • Supplies: Office supplies, Computers, Tools, Equipment, Technology and nearly anything else that “no one will notice”.
  • Intellectual Property / Information: Trade Secrets, Recipes, Blueprints, Databases, Business plans, Ideas, Cloud Storage and Technology are all examples of common examples of intellectual property theft

INVESTIGATING EMPLOYEE THEFT

Employees are protected by both state and federal laws regarding termination for theft. A professional loss prevention investigation into suspected employee theft must provide un-refutable evidence and be conducted by a licensed private investigator to avoid facing serious legal action from the very individual who stole from your company.
